If you have acne-prone skin, understanding pore clogging ingredients—also known as comedogenic ingredients—is one of the most powerful steps you can take toward clearer, healthier looking skin. Pore clogging ingredients are substances found in skincare, makeup, and haircare products that can build up inside your pores, trapping oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria. Over time, these clogged pores can lead to blackheads, whiteheads, closed comedones (clogged hair follicles on the skin that form small bumps), and inflammatory breakouts. 

"Non-comedogenic" is not regulated by the FDA in the United States so there is no official standard, testing requirement, or legal definition a product must meet to use the term. 

Dermatologists and cosmetic chemists often reference the comedogenic scale, which rates ingredients from 0 (won't clog pores) to 5 (highly likely to clog pores). Acne-prone skin is often more sensitive to ingredients that trap oil and dead skin cells within the pore. Individuals with acne-prone skin may also experience increased oil production, slower skin cell turnover, inflammation within the follicle, or a compromised skin barrier. Because of these factors, certain ingredients that work well for dry or non-acne-prone skin may contribute to congestion or breakouts in acne-prone individuals. 

Not all skincare ingredients fit neatly into “safe” or “unsafe” categories for acne-prone skin. Some ingredients are considered controversial because individual experiences and available research can vary significantly. 

Shea butter, for example, is often debated in the skincare community. Some people with acne-prone skin tolerate it well, while others experience congestion. Its effect can depend on the formulation, concentration, and individual skin type. 

Silicones such as dimethicone are also commonly misunderstood. Although some people assume silicones clog pores, many are considered non-comedogenic and are used to create a smooth, breathable barrier on the skin. Still, certain individuals may choose to avoid them based on personal experience. 

Squalane and squalene are frequently confused because of their similar names. Squalane is generally considered lightweight and non-comedogenic, while oxidized squalene has been associated with acne formation. 

Fatty alcohols are another misunderstood category. Unlike drying alcohols, fatty alcohols such as cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol are typically used as emollients and stabilizers. Some acne-prone individuals tolerate them well, while others may find them too rich depending on the product formulation. 

Natural oils can also vary widely in how they affect acne-prone skin. Coconut oil is considered highly comedogenic for many individuals, while oils such as hemp seed oil or sunflower oil are often better tolerated. 

Because skincare responses are highly individual, it is important to evaluate products based on your own skin’s behavior rather than relying solely on generalized ingredient ratings. 

The term “comedogenic” refers to an ingredient’s likelihood of contributing to comedones, which are clogged pores such as blackheads and whiteheads. Some ingredients are considered highly comedogenic because they may be too heavy or occlusive for acne-prone skin, while others have a lower likelihood of causing congestion. 

Comedogenicity ratings are based on available research, ingredient testing, and clinical observations, but they are not absolute rules. An ingredient that triggers breakouts for one person may not affect another person the same way. 

Reading skincare ingredient labels can help you identify ingredients that may contribute to clogged pores or breakouts. 

Ingredients are typically listed in descending order by concentration, meaning the ingredients present in the highest amounts appear first. If a potentially comedogenic ingredient appears near the top of the list, it may have a greater impact on acne-prone skin. 

Commonly flagged ingredients often include heavier oils, fatty esters, algae or seaweed extracts, waxes, thick emollients, and certain fatty alcohols. However, it is important to look beyond individual ingredients and consider the product as a whole. 

A single ingredient does not always determine whether a product will cause congestion. Product texture, formulation, layering habits, and overall skin compatibility all influence how a product performs on acne-prone skin.

Some ingredients are more frequently associated with clogged pores and breakouts in acne-prone skin. Commonly discussed pore-clogging ingredients include isopropyl myristate, ethylhexyl palmitate, coconut oil, cocoa butter, wheat germ oil, algae extract, laureth-4, myristyl myristate, lanolin, and acetylated lanolin. 

These ingredients are often used to improve texture, moisture retention, spreadability, or product stability. Although they may work well for some skin types, individuals prone to acne or congestion may benefit from monitoring how their skin reacts to products containing these ingredients. 

It is also important to remember that ingredient concentration and formulation matter. An ingredient considered highly comedogenic in one formula may behave differently in another formulation depending on how the product is developed and used.  

Not all potentially comedogenic ingredients will cause breakouts for every person. The way an ingredient behaves on the skin depends on several factors, including ingredient concentration, overall product formulation, skin type, climate, frequency of use, and individual sensitivities. 

For example, some people with acne-prone skin may tolerate shea butter or certain oils without issues, while others may experience congestion quickly. Skincare is highly individual, which is why it is important to monitor how your skin responds to specific products and ingredients over time.
